A Study on Self-esteem and Depression of the Elderly


Abstract
The problem addressed by this study is to explore the relationship between self-esteem and depression of the elderly and to identify factors which influence depression.
The purpose is to suggest a basic data for the planning of supportive nursing interventions to improve the health of the elderly,.
The research term is from August 3rd to September 22nd in 1993, and its subjects are the elderly who stay at home that are appropriate to the standard of this study among the elderly who utilize ¢¥a house for the aged¢¥ in ten places located in T town. They are all 200 subjects.
ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise Multiple Regression were used for the data analysis.
The results are summarized as follows.
1 . Among the demographic variables, sex, education, pocket money, and health status were significantly different to the level of self-esteem.
2. The negative correlation between self-esteem and depression of the elderly was observed. That is, the higher the level of self-esteem, the lower the level of depression.
3. The important factors influencing the level of depression of the elderly were self-esteem, health status, age, and education.
Therefore, in order to decrease the level of depression of the elderly, it might be helpful to provide the nursing intervention for improving self-esteem of the elderly.
